Byzantine is a real-time game so you can solve this game in a different order
than I have shown here. You may also have encounters that are not mentioned
here or miss some of these encounters if you do things in a different order.
This walkthrough is an almost optimal way of solving the game. By avoiding
blunders you will miss some scenes and other ways of collecting information.

Looking for Emre

Emre's Apartment

Start a new game. After the opening sequences finish, you are in Emre's
apartment in Istanbul. Your friend Emre is on the run and the police have just
questioned you. What next?

Look around the room. Look at the pattern drawn on the piece of paper on the
table. Look in the box on the table. Take the drawing.

Go into the other room. Look at the desk. Open the blotter and look at the
photos. You keep the photo of Emre with the girl. Note the order of the
colours in the photo of the coloured shapes.

The phone is probably ringing. Answer the phone. It's Emre! Look at the
package in your inventory. Read the letter and the article of the sale of
Constantine's Diadem. Look at the picture postcard. Pick up the camera.

Look at the bookcase. Find "The Art of the Carpet" and take the key. Read the
"The Secret History" and "Turkish Teasers". Read the note about the twin
girls. Look at the "Topkapi" and "Roman Engineering" books. You will need to
remember the diagram of the hoist.

Look at the chest of drawers, open the drawer and look at the photos.

The phone is probably ringing again. Go back to the desk and answer the phone.
Emre again!

Leave the apartment and exit to the map. Go to the Sьleymaniye Mosque.

Try to enter the Mosque. You leave your shoes in the rack. Explore the Mosque.
Leave. Take your shoes from the rack. Show the photo of Emre and the girl to
the young man. Talk to him. Take the pink shoes from the rack. They are
Emre's. Inspect the shoes and you will find a note and a claim check in them.

Exit to the map and go to the Hotel de Londres.

Give the claim check to the man at the front desk. You receive a large
package. Inspect the large package. It contains a betting form, a ticket to
the Basilica Cistern and a strange device. Look at the betting form.

Basilica Cistern

Give the attendant the ticket and pick up a brochure. Look at the brochure.
Included is a photo of the Tear Drop column. Go down into the Cistern and
explore. You will find Emre's dead body. When you look up a man attacks you.
Recall the autosave, and this time use the camera on the man before he
attacks. Move away quickly and keep going until you meet the attendant.

Detective Akalin questions you again.

You exit to the map. Go to Mehmet's Rug Shop.

Who is Klio?

Mehmets' Rug Shop

Go into the back of the shop and talk to Mehmet. Note Mehmet's name for Emre:
Afacan. Mehmet gives you a photo of Emre and himself.

Exit to the map and return to Emre's apartment.

Emre's Apartment

Go to the desk and plug the power cord into the strange device. Someone is
breaking into the apartment! You must hide. Go to the carpet hanging in front
of a door. Move the carpet aside and go through this door. Stay here and
listen to the two men in the apartment. They say they are going to Mehmet's
Rug Shop.

Re-enter the apartment and look in the chest in front of the desk. Open the
decorative box by pressing the buttons in the order depicted in the photo on
the desk: Red, Green, Purple, Yellow, Orange, Blue, Aqua. You find a diagram
of the strange device.

Try using the strange device now it has power. The password is Mehmet's pet
name for Emre.

Exit to the map and go to the rug shop.

Mehmets' Rug Shop

The shop is locked up so use the key to get inside. Take the pencil and
scissors. Find the blue bag hidden in the carpets. Look in the bag. You find a
ring, a letter from Emre, a notebook and a book on Aya Sofya. Read the book.
Use the pencil on the notebook. Read the letter.

Go to the back of the shop. Find the rug with the label on its underside. Use
the scissors on the label and take the bronze medallion.

Where next? Well you tried to log on to the University computer and got kicked
off.

Exit to the map and go to Istanbul University.

Istanbul University

Talk to the girl. She is Sharife Gelecek. Show her the strange device and talk
to her . You find yourself in a simulation of the Topkapi Museum.

Topkapi Museum Simulation

Take the scroll on the sofa and read it. Look at the nearby puzzle. You have
to make six rows of four. Remember the pattern back at Emre's apartment? Put
the stones in this configuration.

Take the letter and cylinder from the sofa. Find the door where the simulation
data is missing. Exit the simulation.

Repairing the Simulations

Istanbul University

Talk to Sharife. Ignore her hint to go the Archeological Museum for now. Exit
to the map and go to the Sьleymaniye Mosque.

Find the engraved door panel at the back of the Mosque. Use the scanner
(strange device) on the panel. Find and talk to the young man.

Exit to the map and return to the university

Istanbul University

Hand the scanner to Sharife. Use the virtual reality visor again.

Topkapi Museum Simulation

Return to the door with missing data and place the scanned data on it. Well --
the door is filled in but the panel above is still missing.

Exit the simulation and exit to the map. Go to Aya Sofya

Aya Sofya

Explore. Open the drain and drop the stone in. Find Hilary Peebles. Talk to
him. Find the Ottoman Library, near by, and the woman there. Show her the
photo of Emre and her. She is Nuray Uchan. Talk to Nuray. Use the scanner on
the tile on the table.

Exit to the map and go to the university

Istanbul University

Hand the scanner to Sharife. Use the virtual reality visor again.

Topkapi Museum Simulation

Return to the missing panel data and place the scanned tile data on the
missing data. Go through the door into the Royal Oasis. Go into the Imperial
Library.

Look at the clock. Put the brass cylinder in the hole. Set the clock to 12:00
and press the left cylinder. Set the clock to 6:30 and press the middle
cylinder. Set the clock to 3:45 and press the right cylinder. Take the key and
the cup.

In one corner of the library is the master switch for the water supply. Turn
it. Return to the Royal Oasis.

Look at the fountain. Turn off the water with the lever. Place the cup in the
mechanism. Turn the water on with the lever. This opens a secret door.

Go though the newly revealed door into the Harem Passage. Follow the passage
down, opening a hard to see door on the way, to the Private Treasury.

Place the key in the chest and open the chest. You find a ruby ring. Continue
exploring if you wish then exit the simulation.

Istanbul University

You talk to Sharife. Eskander enters, they talk, then leave.

You exit to the map. Go to the Archeological Museum.

Archeological Museum

Go into the building with wide steps and go upstairs. Show the woman your
press pass then follow her into her office. She is the Curator. Talk to her.
Go downstairs and find Nuray in the Alexandrine exhibit. Talk to her. She
leaves. Leave the building and you will meet the Detective Akalin again. Be
cooperative! Exit to the map and go to Emre's apartment.

Emre's Apartment

Sharife is waiting for you here. Talk to her and offer to help. Pick up the
newspaper and read it. Note the astrological table. Read the note pinned to
the door way. Go into the apartment. Look at the floor by the door. Pick up
the package and inspect it. Play the cassette in Emre's audio system in the
other room.

Sharife wanted you to repair the Basilica Cistern simulation. Exit to the map
and enter the Basilica Cistern simulation.

Explore until you find the missing data. Exit the simulation and go to the
Basilica Cistern.

Go down to the Cistren and find the Tear Drop Pillar. Try scanning it. It is
too humid! Mmmmm! What other leads do you have? Better follow up that note
from Izzet.

Book Bazaar

Go to the Book Bazaar. Ignore the jewelry merchant. Talk to the book merchant.
Look at the books. The merchant will let you take one of them. Look at it.
Emre has marked it up. Look at the astronomy book on the stand very carefully.
You may need this information later. Look at the newspaper article about the
sales of a liturgical fan.

Now you have another lead. Exit to the map and go to The Arasta.

The Arasta

Go into the shop and buy one of the little bags. Look at the contents. Exit to
the map and go to the Archeological Museum.

Archeological Museum

Enter the main building again. Go upstairs to the curator and show her the
book marked up by Emre. Show her the drawing you found in the box in Emre's
apartment.

Explore the exhibits. You should find Hilary Peebles in the Byzantine exhibit.
Talk to him. Show him the photo of the Tear Drop column. He will tell you
there is another tear drop column at the Forum of Theodosius.

Forum of Theodosius & Galata Tower

Exit to the map and go to the Forum of Theodosius. Scan the tear drop column,
then run away from Carlo to the bushes opposite the car. Eskander sees you and
takes you to Galata tower.

Exit to the map and go into the simulation.

Basilica Cistern Simulation

Find the isolated pillar with missing data and place the tear drop scan on it.


Explore the Cistern and in each location pick up the following items:


South Ramp: forceps & rope
East Wall: treadmill
South West Corner: three engineering supports
West Wall: frame, wooden rod and iron implement
Center: rope & tackle and bronze implement
North Wall: frame

This layout of the Cistern simulation should help:

In the north west corner by the Medusa heads, remove all the loose floor tiles
with the iron implement.

Use the bronze implement on each of the bronze Medusa heads and move them
according to the note about the twin girls. They should end up in these
positions.

Now construct the engineering apparatus: Put up the frames first then add the
rope & tackle. Place the taller support on the far side, then place a support
on the near side. Put the wooden rod in position between the supports, then
place the treadmill on the rod. Place the last support in position. Attach the
forceps & rope. If you need help, here is the diagram of the Roman hoist from
the "Roman Engineering" book:

Operate the apparatus by clicking on the forceps, then the treadmill. When the
block has been lifted as high as possible jam the treadmill with the iron
implement.

Look in the hole. You find the liturgical fan. Take it.

You exit the simulation to the map. Go to the Hotel de Londres.

Tracking down the Smuggling Ring

Talk to Detective Akalin. Exit to the map and go to the university.

Istanbul University

Talk to Sharife. You enter the Ephesus Library simulation.

Go into the library and pick up the scrolls. Read them. Go into the corner at
the front of the library. Look at the words. The data is incorrect.

Exit the simulation. Use the scanner to scan in the Ephesian letters in the
little bag you bought at The Arasta. Hand the scanner over to Sharife.

Enter the simulation via the virtual reality visor again.

Go the corner of the library where you saw the words. Replace the words as
follows:

You go through the now open doorway and down to the sarcophagus. The data is
incorrect here too. Exit the simulation, exit to the map and go the
Archeological Museum.

Do not go inside. Scan the sarcophagus outside the museum. Turn around to exit
and you will see Detective Akalin and Nuray Uchan talking. Talk to Nuray.

Exit to the map and return to the university

Istanbul University

Scan in the bronze medallion and ring. Hand the scanner over to Sharife. Use
the virtual reality visor to re-enter the Ephesus Library simulation.

Return to the sarcophagus and place the scanned sarcophagus data on the
sarcophagus. Look at the sarcophagus. Place the scanned bronze medallion on
the similar symbol in the offering bowl.

Temple of Artemis Simulation

Look down and around and pick up the silver zodiac sign symbols. Go into the
temple. Pick up more zodiac sign symbols. Look at the offering table with nine
indentations. Return to the front of the temple. Turn left and look at the
symbol next to the door. Use the scanned ring data on this symbol. You go up
to the gallery. Look at the statue of Artemis. Explore. Pick up another zodiac
sign symbol. Return downstairs. Turn left and go outside. Explore and collect
the rest of the zodiac sign symbols. You should have a full set of twelve. But
you only need nine!

Return to the offering table in the temple and from left to right place the
silver zodiac sign symbols in the indentations in this order:
1. Pisces
2. Aquarius
3. Capricorn
4. Sagittarius
5. Scorpio
6. Libra
7. Virgo
8. Leo
9. Cancer

Here is the zodiac sign table.

You will need to be careful. Some symbols are not so obvious so you may need
to check the astronomy constellation maps in the book at the Book Bazaar. I
was confused by Pisces.

When you complete this task, the simulation will end abruptly and Sharife will
be mad at you!

Exit to the map and go to the Archeological Museum.

Go upstairs to the curator and talk to her. Now you are getting somewhere!

Exit to the map and go to the Nargile Bar.

Nargile Bar

Look at the lime, then notes the numbers in green on the tiles: 7 0 4 9.

Exit to the map and go to Gordion Construction.

Gordian Construction

Use the code 7049 on the combination lock and go inside. Get in the elevator
and you enter the office. Look at the ledger. Take the papers from inside the
ledger. Leave the way you came quickly. Once outside, look at the notes. Note
Eskander's signature!

Exit to the map and go to the Galatta Tower. (Eskander told you earlier that
Sharife goes here when she is troubled.)

Looking for Proof

Galatta Tower

Talk to Sharife. Show the papers from Gordian Construction to Sharife. Sharife
explains how Eskander is able to run the smuggling ring. But you need proof or
you are going to be arrested instead of Eskander!

You enter another simulation: Aya Sofya.

Aya Sofya Simulation

Explore the simulation and find the following articles in these locations:


Inner Narthex: helmet
Upper Gallery: dividers
Apse: chalice and orb
Lower Gallery: flask.

Go to the omphalos in the nave and place the chalice in position, followed by
the helmet, then the dividers.

Go upstairs and put the flask on the Empress omphalos.

Return to the nave omphalos and place the orb. Save. Take the diadem, then all
hell breaks lose. You are in big trouble now! You have limited time to prove
Eskander's guilt. Leave quickly and go through the drain. Enter the hard drive
simulation.

Hard Drive Simulation

Save. Find the representations of the smuggled artifacts using this path
through the hard drive simulation. In this 'room' is a rectangular hollow in
the wall. Click on it. This repesents system functions. Click on Knot and then
click on transactions. Take the copy of transactions and click it on the hub,
then the computer lab then the hub again. If you do this in time, you won't be
arrested.
