CHAPTER ONE

You begin in your office at Department P, (the KGB's version of
Internal Affairs). Your new colleague Belov is of no importance.
You can go straight to Vovlov's Office or wait until he calls
you. Either way you should go to see him. Your first initiative
mission will be described. Once your briefing is over you should
go straight to Golitsin's office at Red October Street.

(i) Golitsin's office
Outside is a militia man. He will want to see your identity
papers. Show them to him then let yourself in. Once inside you
must search and find a number of items:

(a) Transistor Radio - You'll find batteries.
(b) Raincoat - You'll find two dollars.
(c) Filing Cabinet - You'll find a vodka bottle and a glass.
(d) The desk - You'll find a pack of cigarettes, matches and a

    box of matches.
(e) The phone - You'll find a bug (switched off).
(f) Window - You'll briefly see a mysterious figure.
(g) The drawer - It's locked!

Go back outside and ask the militia man for the key. He will give
it to you. Return inside and unlock the drawer with the small
key. Inside you will find a newspaper cutting and a recorder.

NB 1: Remember to examine ALL items that you find. If you do not
then they will not be regarded as valid when it comes to
discussing them with other people in the game.

Golitsin's sister will turn up at one point. Tell her that her
brother is dead and then ask her to sit down. Ask her why she
came to the office and she will tell you of the note her brother
left for her. You can find out more information about her and her
brother. When you tell her she can leave she will give you a
micro cassette left to her by her brother. She will then depart.

Put the batteries in the recorder then play back the cassette.
You will hear the details of Golitsin's final case, involving a
man with the codename "Hollywood".

Leave the office and give the small key back to the militia man
before you head back to Department P. (He will ask for it anyway
if you don't). As soon as you arrive back at Department P (no
later than 6pm!) Vovlov will summon you back into his office to
make your report. Firstly tell him about the bug you found. Then
tell him about Golitsin's sister and the micro-cassette. When he
asks if you have listened to it, say that it seemed advisable.
Don't worry about getting told off for this. You will finally be
asked for the codename of the man Golitsin was supposed to meet.
Answer "Hollywood" as told to you by the cassette.

You will return to your office and moments later will be summoned
to see Colonel Galushkin (a friend of your late parents). He will
give you a new mission to infiltrate the Enthusiastic Progress
Club and find out who this "Hollywood" character is. You must
also find out where he lives and have a good look around. You
must report back by 8am tomorrow morning.

As you leave Department P your weapon, uniform and I.D papers are
removed. You are given false papers instead.

(ii) Uncle Vanya's
Quickly pop back to Uncle Vanya's flat. You can ask him about
your late parents to learn how they died. Go into your bedroom
and take 60 dollars from the drawer. There's nothing else of any
importance to do here so leave and head for your new
destination...Kursk Street.

(iii) Kursk Street
You start outside a bar. Go along the street corner and go into
the first door you encounter. It is dark in here. Go up. Light a
match and look in the nearby cupboard. Take the clipboard then go
back down and out into the street. If you look at the clipboard
you will see a blank sheet of paper on it. Walk along the street
sidewalk, past a garbage can. You will come across another
unlocked door. Go in and you will see a number of doors on either
side and a plaque which recommends you go and see the
superintendent upstairs in apartment 7.

(iv) The apartments
Knock on the door of number 7. When the young woman (Zhanna)
appears, pretend that you're doing an opinion poll on crime and
she will let you inside. You will also meet Klara. Immediately
admit that you lied about the opinion poll and that you are
really on the trail of murderers. Find out all you can about the
club and the neighbours in the building. You will know if you say
the wrong thing as you will be asked to leave. If you are careful
you will find out lots of information and can leave when you're
ready to (about 8.50pm ish).

Dispose of the clipboard by leaving in the toilets at the end of
the corridor. If you don't you will not last long inside the club
as they will recognise it as their own and will wonder how you
came across it! Anyway, knock on door 5 and speak to Belussov
about Lefortovo (as long as the women in apartment 7 told you
first). He will suggest you stop bothering him and speak to
Ryumin in apartment 4 instead. Go down to apartment 4 and knock
on the door. When asked say you are not from the club, then
mention Wrangel Island. You will be let inside. Ask Ryumin about
the club and his neighbours. You will eventually be asked to
leave.

Once outside you should see one small and one large duo going up
the stairs, (Lyonka is the large one, Petka is the small). Listen
to what they have to say to each other as it gives a vital clue
to what you must do a little later on.

(v) The Enthusiastic Progress Club
Go upstairs and knock on the closest door on the right hand side.
The club manager will open the door and you will step in. Tell
him you are there to meet someone and when he asks for the name
tell him it isn't possible. Now tell him you are willing to pay
to join the club and offer him 30 dollars. You are now allowed in
properly. Speak to the young man trying to sell videos. Speak to
the drunk nearby. Go back into the other half of the club. A
young client will go to the toilet out the back then come back in
and leave. Immediately go into the backroom toilet and look in
the trashcan. You will find a small bag with cocaine. Take this
and flush it down the toilet then return to the club.

Speak to Lyonka and Petka. When they ask if you would like to go
to a party with them say yes and follow them outside. Outside you
must fight one of them. Don't fight the smaller Petka but instead
attack the larger Lyonka. (The clue came from their conversation
that you heard outside apartment 4 earlier). You will kill Lyonka
and Petka will run off. Search the body to find a lockpick. Now
move the body into the garbage can further down the street to
avoid it being found.

NB 2: None of the characters you find in the streets (drunks, old
men, old women, prostitutes etc.) are of any importance. Ignore
them.

(vi) The Meat Shop
There is a door down Kursk Street which is locked. Use the
lockpick to open it. Go inside. Turn on the light. Go through the
other door. Use a match to light the room. Immediately examine
the cash desk. You will find a switch and a red diode. The diode
is not lit. If you look at them in more detail you will see a
well hidden wire running from the switch to the cold-room door at
handle height.

To get into the cold room you must first flick the switch then
open the door and enter. It is very cold inside. Use the light
switch and examine the carcasses that are hanging in here to
discover that they are human cadavers! Turn off the light and
leave the room. Light another match and flick the switch behind
the cash desk again. Now leave the way you came and go back into
the street.

You must get to the bottom of this! You know from talking to
others that the man in apartment 6 owns the shop, so you go back
to the apartment building and knock on door 6. When the large man
opens the door verify that he is Anatoli Sytenko then tell him
that you've looked in his cold-room. He will let you in
immediately and ask his children to go to bed. He will then
reveal what happened to him, why his wife died of a heart attack
and why there are dead bodies in his meat shop. He will also tell
you that the old woman in apartment 8 is harbouring the KGB
monsters involved in the plot. This is the info you've been
waiting for!

(vii) Chevchenkova's apartment
As you leave apartment 6, you will see the old woman leaving her
apartment. Once she has gone, get out the lock pick and get
inside. Turn on the light and examine the drawer. You will find
some photographs and a piece of apparently blank white paper.
Look at the photos and the white paper (you will see nothing on
it).

Go through the right hand door at the back of the room. Turn on
the light.

NB 3: Depending on your timing you might not have enough time to
discover all of the items in this room before you are
interrupted. Don't worry - you should get the chance a little
later on once you have escaped. Some of them don't appear until
this has happened anyway, e.g (c).

(a) Cupboard - a camera, (4 pictures left).
(b) Drawer - Video cassettes.
(c) Sideboard - Photo of you in cell.
(d) Television - Folder (with photos of your dead parents!)

You will be interrupted by a group of men entering the room. One
of them is "Hollywood" or Verto as his real name is. Another will
be Romeo and the twins from the club. Don't worry about being
caught red handed for now.

You will awake in a small room with nothing but a table. Verto
and the twins will come in and talk to you then take two pictures
before leaving. Take this opportunity to examine the table and
find a bug which is activated (on). Do nothing else to it for the
moment except take it. Look at the door and the buzzer above it.
After a while a young woman will be thrown into the room. Talk to
her but give nothing away. An American man will also be shoved in
after a while and he will suggest killing the woman. Refuse to.
The woman will be let out. She was a plant by the men outside to
find out information! Talk to the man (Greenberg) for a while
before you hear shouting form outside. When the voices are
lowered listen at the door. (If you flushed the drugs down the
toilet in the club earlier then this will be mentioned. If you
didn't then there's no way you will get out of here as the woman
will be high on the cocaine). Once you've heard the whispered
conversation destroy the bug you found on the table and show it
to Greenberg. He should now trust you a little more.
                                        
Together you will formulate a plan to get out. Tell Greenberg
that the alarm is connected to the cold-room in the meat shop.
This will give him an idea about messing with the buzzer to get
rid of the man outside. Agree with the plan. When the man
departs, shout out to the woman (Rita) that you can help her.
Tell her she needs cocaine, then tell her that you know where it
is because you took it from the club. Promise to tell her where
it is if she opens the door. Once she does attack her and she
will shoot wide and hit her head. Move the body into the room on
the right (the studio where you were first discovered by Verto,
Romeo and the twins). Greenberg will leave with the Rita's gun.

Go back into the living room and open the drawer and recover all
of your items. Take a photo of the blank white paper then put the
paper back where you found it in the drawer. Go back into the
studio room and look at the sideboard to find a photo. It is the
one of you in the cell that they took earlier. If there are any
other items that you didn't get before look at the list above and
take them. Don't watch the video cassettes though until after
Verto has been knocked out.

When you hear someone coming in you should immediately turn off
the lights and hide behind the door. If you time it wrongly Verto
will see you and kill you. If you get it right, Verto will come
in and you will have the chance to attack him in the dark. Once
on the ground take the gun, the photo, a piece of blue paper and
the camera. Use the camera to take a picture of the piece of blue
paper then put the blue paper back on Verto.

Turn off the light and leave the apartment and the building. Once
in the side street look at the photos you took of the white and
blue papers. You can see writing on them! They are as follows:

LNNRDU13MAOAAK and EIGAAG6PLDGPR.

Take each letter alternately to make the message LENINGRAD AUG 16
3PM LADOGA PARK.

(By leaving the pieces of paper where you found them, they do not
know that you now know where the meeting will take place).

Now you must return to Department P to make your report. You are
that eager that it doesn't matter what the time is. Arriving at
the Department you will make report at 8am to Major Vovlov.

(viii) Conclusion
Inside his office, Vovlov will talk to you about the American
agent Greenberg. Say that he was only a mere pawn in your
strategy. You won't be paid any compliments by the Major but he
will admit that you were 'lucky' enough to succeed in your
mission! You will then be sent to see Colonel Galushkin.

He will congratulate you then ask you what you intend doing next.
Say that you wish to go to Leningrad, then mention Ladoga Park
and 3pm Aug 16th. Galushkin will agree with your plan and tell
you to meet with a controller in Leningrad. You are also warned
about the Leningrad KGB's mistrust of Department P.

Go to the equipment officer and you will be given some new
equipment and an explanation of how it all works: transmitter,
receiver and camera. You are now ready to embark on your journey
to Leningrad...

CHAPTER TWO

(i) Room 205
1pm Aug 16th. You are in room 205 in the Hotel Gostinitsa,
Leningrad. You have on you 300 rubles, your mission orders, your
I.D, files on Leningrad Department 7 officers, a camera, your
record-receiver and microphone transmitter.

Read all of the files and the mission orders. To be on the safe
side you should destroy these before you do anything else.

Now look around the room. Examine the table then the phone. Go
into the bathroom. Before you open the door the phone will ring.
Answer it. You will hear a message about Boris remembering to
check the light before brushing his teeth. Tell them they have
the wrong number and make a note of the number the voice
mentions.

(ii) Codes
Now go into the bathroom and turn on the light switch by the
door. Look at the neon light to find a sheet of paper with a lot
of numbers and letters on it.

Looking at the mirror you will see that there are FIVE tiles on
the horizontal and the vertical. It looks like a grid and this is
a clue as to what you must do to crack the code.

Using the letter and number pairs on the sheet of paper you will
spell out a message, e.g S3 is an E, I4 is an N, S4 is an O, R7
is an H, B5 is a P, S3 is an E, R7 is an H, S5 is a T and I4 is
an N etc.

Read this backwards and it says IF YOU WANT TO LIVE SWITCH YOUR
ROOM LIGHT ON AND OFF THREE TIMES IN SUCCESSION THEN DIAL THE
NUMBER YOU HEARD ON THE PHONE.

Return to your room and switch the light on and off three times
(six switches in all). Pick up the phone and dial 37452. A voice
will congratulate you and tell you to contact a man at 7pm in the
alley outside your hotel. The code word "Cut-throat" should be
used then you must show him your I.D. When you eventually meet
him he will want to know a lot of information so ensure you keep
notes on everything that you are told.

NB 4: If you don't do this then when you try leaving the hotel
you will be shot at and killed by a hidden sniper!

You should now pay a visit to Leningrad Department 7 before you
go to the park. Leave the microphone behind in your apartment and
if you didn't destroy the files and other paper work - don't take
them with you either.

(iii) Department 7
Leave your room and go downstairs (the lift is out of order).
Leave the hotel, quickly examine the phone booth outside then go
to Department 7. Once inside talk to the inquiries officer behind
the desk. Tell him who you are then show him your I.D papers.
Tell him you are after information and when he asks by whose
authority, say Colonel Kusnetsov's. After a quick phone call to
check out your story, you are given a pass. Show this to the
guard. He will take nearly all of your possessions before
allowing you to go upstairs.

You are shown into Kusnetsov's office. He doesn't like you much
so be careful what you say to him. He will authorise you to visit
the other offices in the building. You are first shown into Major
Agabekov's office. He is busy signing papers when you enter.
There is something in his wastepaper bin but you can't find out
what it is with him in the room. Examine the phones on his desk
to note the extension numbers. Talk to him about his duties and
his directives, then go through the other topics made available
to you. Leave the office and go into Drobnitsa's.

Go through the available questions, noting any responses you
think might be important. Leave the office. Go to the empty
office at the end of the hall and use the phone. Dial Agabekov
and tell him to listen carefully. Tell him you have information
then tell him you want to meet him in front of the building in 3
minutes. To persuade him tell him it's about the visitor from
Moscow. Now leave the office and wait for Agabekov to leave his
office and go downstairs. Don't worry about the guard as you have
authority to visit any office you wish. Pop into Agabekov's
office and retrieve the remains of the cuban cigar from his
wastepaper bin. Now leave the building. You will be given all of
your possessions back. (If you had the microphone they will have
'accidently' broken it, so ensure you don't take it with you).

(iv) Ladoga Park
Pop back to your Hotel and collect the microphone. Now go
straight to the park (it should be around 2.45pm). Go to the park
bench and place the microphone on it. Now plug in the headphones
to the listening device and set it to record. Hide behind the
tree and wait. A man will sit down on the bench at about 2.55pm.
At 3.05pm Romeo will appear carrying a briefcase. After a short
conversation he will go, leaving the briefcase with the other
man. A short while later he too will leave. Quickly collect the
microphone, stop the listening device and follow the man across
the road to the subway station entrance. Whilst waiting for
something else to happen, listen to the recorded conversation
(playback recording 1).

Chapkin will turn up and meet the man in the metro station
entrance. Listen to what they have to say to each other. When
they go their separate ways you must follow Romeo's contact
instead of the contacts contact (Chapkin).

(v) The Warehouse
Following the contact you will end up at Hammer & Sickle Street.
The man will head for a nearby warehouse and begin punching in a
code. To see the code get out your camera and look at the keypad
through the view finder. He will go inside. Now wait a short
while and he will come out again (but without the briefcase) and
go into the bar next door. Now use the keypad and type in the
code you saw (14C9A) to get into the warehouse.

Once in the storeroom have a quick look at the packing cases. Now
look at the table to find the briefcase. Open the briefcase and
look inside to see some video cassettes. Make sure you put them
back in the briefcase and place it back on the desk when you have
finished. Go through the door at the back to enter the back
storeroom. Look at the packing cases here. They would make a good
place to hide. Now go through the left hand door at the end of
the room. You will find yourself in an office. Examine the room
quickly. Place the bug on the desk and leave the room. Have a
quick look around the garage if you must. Now go up the ladder
into the loft area. Examine and open the skylight and then set
the listening device to record and leave it on the floor of the
loft. Go down. Now leave the building and enter the bar next
door. Go through the door inside and up the stairs to the right.
You will find yourself in a room with a skylight. Examine and
open the skylight. Go through the skylight. On the roof go
through the other skylight to re-enter the warehouse. No go down
the ladder and hide behind the packing cases in the back
storeroom. Wait.

You will hear a doorbell and then a conversation between two
people in the storeroom at the front of the warehouse. Various
people will walk through to the back storeroom and visit the
office then come back out again. You won't be able to hear some
of the conversations from your hiding place but don't worry -
that's why you bugged the office. Anyway, the sharp dresser
(Obukov) will talk to the man guarding the front of the warehouse
before leaving. You must follow him! Go up the ladder and out
through the skylight. Now go down the stairs and out through the
bar.

NB 5: It is important that the bar owner sees you come in and go
out again each time, otherwise he will become suspicious and not
allow you in again.

You should see Obukov head for the subway. Follow him.

(vi) Hotel Syevyernaya Zvyezda
Enter the lobby of the hotel. Go through the door into the
cocktail bar. Wait a while and Major Agabekov will walk in. When
he leaves again follow him out to the lobby. He will have a quiet
word with Obukov and then Obukov will leave. Follow him. He will
go back to the warehouse. Go through the bar, up the stairs,
through both skylights, down the ladder and hide behind the
packing cases again in the back storeroom of the warehouse (it
should be just before 6.30pm). Wait and Ubukov will go into the
office for a while then come out and talk to the man in the front
storeroom before leaving. Nip up the ladder and pick up your
listening device. Stop it then rewind back to recording 2 and
listen to each one in turn with the headphones on. You will learn
a lot of valuable information. You should have 13 recordings in
total (14 will be blank as it hasn't been used), although a few
of those will be inaudible as the conversations were too far away
from the bug. Don't worry though - you heard them from your
hiding place amongst the packing cases so either way you have
heard or got recordings off all the conversations that took place
in the warehouse that afternoon.

Leave via the skylights, go down the stairs and out through the
bar. Once in Hammer & Sickle Street head for the metro and go
back to your own hotel, Gostinitsa. You have a secret meeting
arranged for 7pm in the alley nearby.

(vii) Cut-throats and controllers
Wait a while in the alley and a shadowy figure should appear. He
will say Cut-throat. Show him your I.D. The figure will then ask
if you found anything in Agabekov's office. Tell him about the
cuban cigar. He will ask who is handling the video tapes in
Leningrad. Tell him Mechulaiev and Savchenko. When he asks for
the contact between Savchenko and Romeo's gang tell him it is
Yakuchev. When he asks who is taking the videos out of Russia and
when, tell him Viktor Matsnev does it tomorrow. When the figure
asks what Mechulaiev gets in exchange tell him about the drugs.
Finally, when he asks who Mr X is, tell him it is Agabekov.

Now you have a chance to ask some questions of your own. Once
you've done this you will be asked to meet him again at 11am
tomorrow morning. The figure will also mention something called
New Birth and ask you to find out about it. He will then depart.

Go up to your hotel room 205 and wait there. After a while you
will hear a knock on the door and your controller will walk in
dragging a body! Savinkov will explain how he found the man
waiting in ambush and how he killed him. Examine the body and
take the hat, overcoat and photo. Examine each one in turn. The
photo is of you! You will have noticed a number on the mans left
palm. Tell your controller that the number is for the phone booth
outside the hotel (you will only know this if you have examined
the phone booth before). Savinkov will tell you about the other
man waiting in the booth. Phone the number. Respond Yes, Come Up,
Not Exactly and I found something. Come up. This will get the
other man to come up to your room. You must act quickly on
Savinkov's plan to ambush the man. Move the body into the
bathroom. Wear the hat and coat and turn out the lights. Savinkov
will hide behind the door. When the accomplice knocks on the door
tell him to come in. The hat and coat will fool him completely.
Your controller will knock the man out cold.

You will have to tell your controller everything when he asks
except for the Cut-throat affair. The man will come round
eventually and you will get information out of him. He was sent
to kill you! Your controller will then take off with him. Your
orders are to get rid of the dead body before he returns in one
hour. When he has gone, move the body from your room to the room
diagonally opposite yours on the other side of the corridor, (the
door nearest to the stairs down). Inside is a drunk man sleeping
heavily. Search the bed to find a bottle of vodka. Pour some
vodka on the dead body. Leave the room and go down stairs. Go out
of the building and step into the alleyway. Two down and outs
will be there. Give them the bottle of vodka and they will leave.
Go back to the hotel lobby and complain to the receptionist about
some noise. He will go upstairs. Examine the desk to find a
wheelchair. Take it and go outside into the alley. Drop the
wheelchair here and go back into the hotel. Go upstairs. Enter
the drunks room. Move the body through the window. Go back
downstairs and out into the alleyway. Get the wheelchair and move
the body into it. Now move him further down the alleyway towards
the canal. Two militia men will see you but believe that the dead
body is just drunk. When they have gone, tip the body and
wheelchair into the canal.

Re-enter the hotel and go back to your room. Wait for Savinkov to
return. He will issue you with new instructions. Go to the Hotel
as ordered. (It should be just before 10pm by now). Talk to the
woman in the short skirt in the cocktail bar about room 304. She
will suggest you talk to Tamara. Tamara will appear moments
later. Talk to her. You haven't got the 50 U.S dollars she wants
so tell her you'll be back later. An elegantly dressed woman
should soon appear in the bar. Talk to her and she will know who
you are. Go out to the lobby. She will reveal herself as a C.I.A
Agent (Carla Wallace). Ask her some questions but make sure you
get some money out of her first. She will give you 150 U.S
dollars. When you've finished talking to her (don't trust her too
much) go back into the cocktail bar and you will see Greenberg.
Talk to him. He will ask a few simple questions. Tell him who
your controller is and where you went that afternoon. He will
arrange to see you tomorrow at noon (12) in Ladoga Park. You must
try and find out about a mysterious character named Protopopov.

Talk again to Tamara and tell her that you've got the money. Show
the money to her as well as she won't believe you. Now go to room
304. Tell her that you only want to talk. Get her to tell you
about the other room that she uses occasionally (room 416).
When you've run out of time take the lift to the fourth floor and
pay the women 10 dollars to let you into room 416. Once inside
look at the mirror. It looks like a two way mirror! Take the
ashtray from nearby and throw it against the mirror. It will
break. Go through the hole in the mirror into the room next door.
Inside you will find video equipment which should be examined.
Take the framed photograph from the sidetable and go back through
the hole and leave via room 416.

Return to your own hotel. It will be quite late and you will be
feeling very tired. Knock on the door and you will be let inside.
Go up to your room. Now, remove the headphones from the listening
device. Rewind the recorder to recording 13. Set the playback to
voice activated then leave the device in the closet. Use the bed
to go to sleep.

You will be awoken at 6.30 am with a kick in the side. Chapkin is
in your room with a gun. Obey him and go into the bathroom.
Choose the possible reply that contains the word "talk". This
should activate the recording device in the closet and it will
start playing. Chapkin will be distracted for a second and you
should attack him whilst you have the chance.

Once he is on the floor examine him and take the gun and the
syringe. Examine both. Use the syringe on Chapkin. It is a truth
drug and he will tell you all you need to know. Unfortunately it
does have a lethal side effect and he will die soon after.

Savinkov will return. Tell him all that you've discovered since
he's been away. He will ask for the gun. Give it to him. He will
then issue you with new instructions. He will also give you a
brand new camera (the old one didn't work). When he leaves you
will sleep until about 10.15am. Move the dead body into the
closet. Go outside and wait in the side alley for your meeting
with the shadowy figure at 11am. A down and out will arrive. To
get rid of him you must give him the new camera you've just been
issued with. He will leave you with his edition of Pravda and
then depart. Look at the newspaper to reveal a message telling
you to wait for a phone call at 11.15am by the phone booth. At
about 11.15am the phone will ring. Answer it immediately. Tell
Cut-throat your latest news and ask him as many relevant
questions as you can.

Once the phone call is over, it is time to head for the park for
your noon appointment with Greenberg.

(viii) Greenberg at Lodoga Park
Go to the park and wait for Greenberg to arrive. Talk to him. You
still haven't found anything out about this Protopopov character.
He will eventually remind you that you have a boat to catch. You
will go to the Quay.

CHAPTER THREE

(I) The Boat
If you try getting onto the Jetty you will be forced back to the
Quay by the guard. Instead, dive into the water to the left of
the boat and you will swim around to the other side. Climb
onboard the tugboat. You will see a man at the other end of the
boat. Hide behind the fish boxes. The man will come down to your
end of the boat and say something significant, then return to the
other end. Take this opportunity to go down. Go through the door
into the cabin and examine the beds. You will come across a
number of items. The only ones that you need are the belt and the
bottle of rum. Go back up. Drop the bottle of rum into the water
on the same side of the boat as the man is looking (left on
screen). He will see the bottle bob past in the water and dive in
to rescue it. Use this chance to go to the other (stern) end and
go down into the engine room. Hide in the nearby closet. The man
(Kapiton) will come down and start drinking from the bottle. Your
controller will pop down briefly (what is he doing there?).

Someone else will pay Kapiton a visit. The boat will be moving by
now. Wait long enough and he will drink all of the rum and fall
asleep. The boat's engine will break down. Use the belt to fix it
before anyone comes down to investigate. At about 9.30pm it will
be dark outside. At midnight Kapiton will be called to the cabin.
Go up. From the stern end you will see Clara Wallace board the
boat! Kapiton will go back down to the engine room (you don't
have to hide at this point as it is too dark to be easily seen).
The others (including Wallace) will go down to the cabin at the
other end of the boat. Quickly go to the other end and go down.
Listen to the conversation and examine the room to find two
cases. Open them up. One contains a small bag of white salt, the
other a small bag of drugs! Put them back into the cases but
swapped around. Examine the large crate. Now go up and return to
the stern deck before you are caught. Hide in the fish boxes.
Keep waiting until 7.30am. Now is your chance to escape from the
boat. Leap into the water and make your way back to the Quay.

CHAPTER FOUR

You must go straight to Department 7 and wait outside. At 9.15am
Agabekov will drive away in a car. Follow him by hailing a taxi.
You will lose him briefly. When you catch sight of him again he
will just be leaving The Progress of Mankind Street.

(i) The Progress of Mankind Street
Enter the building. Show your I.D to the two guards and you will
be taken to see the man in charge.

NB 6: Whilst in this building DO NOT arouse their suspicions that
you are not working with or for Agabekov (unless told to do so).

Talk to the man and you will discover that a certain Protopopov
was delivered inside the crate from the boat. He was accidently
seen by a nurse who then made a phone call. You learn that an
alarm went off and in the confusion four men came in and
kidnapped Protopopov! Agabekov turned up and took the nurse.

As long as you do not make him to suspicious, you will be
authorised to look around the building. Go into each room and
have a quick look around. Do not talk to any of the patients yet.
In the last room there is a door at the back. Go through this
door and you will find yourself locked into the green room...

(ii) The Green Room
This is a room used to recondition the patients in some way.
After a while a voice will come over the speaker. Try to remain
calm but after a while insist on your identity. You will
eventually be let out. Go through the door into the next room. In
here you will find a scientist surrounded by equipment. Talk to
him about what he does here. His answers aren't exactly
convincing. Examine the equipment. Notice the button on the
table. Let slip that you don't work for Agabekov. The scientist
will make a break for it. Immediately press the button to lock
him into the Green room. Now step into the cabinet. You will see
a startling vision of your dead father! He will tell you all
sorts of things - most of it doesn't make much real sense at the
time. Leave the cabinet once the vision has gone.

Now is the time to get the truth from the scientist. Wait and do
nothing despite his threats until he pleads with you and says he
can't breath and he'll tell you anything. Now ask him the
questions. Note that the red light doesn't flash anymore so it's
indicating that he is finally telling the truth. You will learn
all about the experiments they do here to erase people's
personalities and give them new ones (effectively reprogramming
humans to do anything they want them to do!). The scientist will
eventually pass out. Press the button and leave the green room.

Talk to patient Golvbev. Say the keyword "Saliva" and he will
repeat everything that was said by the four men who kidnapped
Protopopov! Now leave the building.

(iii) Rendezvous with Greenberg
Return to your hotel. The down and out who left you the edition
of Pravda earlier is there. He tells you that Yacuchev lives in
Gorki Street. Go immediately to Gorki Street and enter the
building. You will meet up with Greenberg who is nursing an
injured arm. He unfortunately had to kill Yacuchev. Look quickly
around the room. Look at the icon that hangs on the wall to find
half a photograph which belongs with the other half you found
earlier in the game. Talk to Greenberg and mention some of the
unusual things your dead father said to you in the cabinet.
Mention "Memories Bible". This will lead Greenberg to give you a
Russian translation of Mein Kampf. Also mention the "Motherland"
mentioned by the four kidnappers. This will cause Greenberg to
give you a book mark. Examine the book and the book mark and make
your way to...

(iv) Great Patriotic Street
At Great Patriotic Street there is an exhibition called "The
Motherland". Enter the Gallery. Notice the light switch. You can
examine the pictures if you like. The woman in charge will tell
you that the gallery is closing in a few minutes. She will just
be about to close when the western woman will ask her a question
and she will momentarily disappear round the corner. Take this
chance to hide in the wall closet. When she re-appears she thinks
that you've already left and escorts the western woman outside
and then locks the doors.

You are now alone in the gallery. Go around the corner and
examine the desk. You will find a long letter opener. Examine the
statue nearby and take the sword out. Now go round the corner and
turn off the lights. Go back to the statue and place the letter
opener in the slot on the statue where the sword had been. The
nearby painting will slide back, revealing a hidden room! Enter
the room...

(v) Protopopov
In the middle of this otherwise empty room is a man on a chair.
The man looks remarkably like the Russian President, but it can't
be! Your controller Savinkov will arrive with Vovlov! After some
explanations, Vovlov will shoot Savinkov. He will then order you
to kill Protopopov. Agree but then don't do it. Suddenly Uncle
Vanya and Yegor will arrive and the full story is revealed.
Unfortunately there is a lot of betrayal and counter betrayal.
Vovlov goes to shoot Uncle Vanya but Yegor throws himself at him
and gets shot instead. With the two of them on the ground, search
the floor and pick up Savinkov's gun. Vovlov will come around and
try to shoot you. Shoot him first.

The plot is complicated. The video cassettes were only a cover
for the real operation - an attempt to substitute the Russian
President with a re-programmed imposter (Protopopov). As soon as
you have shot Vovlov, Protopopov recites the speech that he has
been conditioned to read where he (masquerading as the President)
would have resigned and handed power over to some hard line
communists. Those behind the plot have had the real President
arrested. However the plan will now not work as the imposter has
been exposed by you. The mystery regarding your parents death is
also explained here.
