In SE3, you can give yourself some extra technology at the beginning. At the
setup game screen, on the third or fourth screen ( I wouldn't know, I haven't
played the game in a while), you can configure your tech levels, etc. (I think
its the civilization screens). Anyways, if you have the registered version,
you can give yourself warp point technology and close the warp points leading
to your systems. When you have enough power, you can slowly advance using
closed ships to blow up the star in a neighbooring system and close the warp
points and slowly take the whole place over. Trust me, it really works.
